CLEANING

We once ruined a favorite linen shirt after a picnic under the pines, only to discover that the golden, sticky resin clinging to the fabric isn't nearly as permanent as it feels in that first panicked moment. These ten remedies turn what seems like a laundry disaster into a simple fix, using items already waiting in the pantry or medicine cabinet.

HOUSEHOLD

Apple cider vinegar has been used as a folk remedy for centuries , and science now backs many of its traditional applications, from balancing blood sugar to brightening skin. We rounded up more than 40 ways this pantry staple can transform your health, home, and beauty routine.

TIP OF THE DAY

Can Your Lawn Fertilize Itself?

Mow over fallen leaves when they cover less than half the grass blades, chopping them into confetti-sized bits that filter down to the soil. This technique, called grasscycling with leaves, returns nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to the lawn as the pieces decompose over winter.

Make two or three passes in different directions to thoroughly shred thick layers. Avoid this method only if leaves are matted or wet enough to smother grass underneath.

BUG CONTROL

When ants invaded our test kitchen last spring, we discovered that pantry staples like vinegar, borax, and dish soap worked faster than store-bought sprays. These 14 homemade recipes cost pennies per batch and stop ants in their tracks without harsh chemicals near food or pets.

FUN FACT

Sloooowww MRI

Raymond Damadian's 1977 MRI prototype required nearly five hours to produce one grainy chest scan of a graduate student named Larry Minkoff, who had to lie motionless inside a hand-wound magnet the size of a small car.

Today's machines capture detailed images in under 30 minutes, and some sequences finish in seconds. The original device weighed several tons and filled an entire lab.
