PLANTS & GARDEN

A NASA study found that certain houseplants can remove up to 87% of air toxins in 24 hours, turning any workspace into a healthier environment. We've rounded up 17 forgiving varieties that thrive on neglect and still deliver fresh air and calm energy to your desk.

TIP OF THE DAY

Unwanted Garlic Sprouts

Store whole, unpeeled garlic bulbs in a cool, dry spot with good airflow—a wire basket on the counter or a mesh bag in the pantry works beautifully. Keep them away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Aim for 60–65°F if possible, though room temperature is fine for a few weeks. Skip the fridge; cold and humidity turn cloves rubbery and bitter.

BUG CONTROL

We once watched a backyard barbecue turn into a full-scale retreat when yellow jackets claimed the potato salad as their own—a reminder that these aggressive wasps can crash any outdoor gathering in seconds. These five proven strategies will help reclaim your space and keep those striped invaders at bay so you can enjoy the outdoors in peace.

FUN FACT

Chewing Gum Cured Toothaches

John B. Curtis sold the first commercial chewing gum in 1848, but he wasn't trying to freshen breath or fight cavities. He boiled spruce tree resin into chunks and marketed it as "State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum," claiming it could soothe sore gums and clean teeth.

The chewy sap had been used by Native Americans for centuries, and Curtis simply packaged the tradition. His Portland factory produced about 1,800 boxes a day.
