TIP OF THE DAY

Mildew Stains on Outdoor Cushions

Combine one cup of white vinegar with one cup of water and spray directly onto the stained areas. Let the solution sit for 15 minutes to break down mildew, then scrub with a stiff brush.

For tough stains, make a paste with three tablespoons of baking soda and one tablespoon of water, apply it over the vinegar-treated spot, and scrub again. Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose and dry in direct sunlight. Vinegar's acidity kills mildew without bleaching colored fabric.

FUN FACT

First Electric Windmill Used 20K Pounds of Wood

Charles F. Brush built his pioneering wind turbine in 1888, with a rotor 56 feet across and a tower 60 feet tall. The machine had 144 cedar blades and generated enough power to charge batteries that lit his Cleveland mansion for 20 years.

Brush considered the project a success even though the turbine only produced 12 kilowatts, about enough to run a modern household air conditioner.
