TIP OF THE DAY

Is there a trick to ripen avocados?

Place hard avocados in a paper bag with a banana or apple, fold the top closed, and leave the bag on your counter. Check daily by gently squeezing near the stem.

The ethylene gas released by the banana or apple speeds up ripening, usually cutting the wait time to two or three days. Once ripe, move avocados to the refrigerator to pause further softening.

BUG CONTROL

Ants can navigate their way to a bathroom water source from more than 100 feet away, following invisible scent trails laid down by their scouts. We've rounded up 11 simple, proven methods to break those ant trails and reclaim your space for good.

FUN FACT

A chef invented potato chips out of spite.

George Crum, a chef at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, NY, invented the potato chip in 1853 after a diner complained that his fried potatoes were too thick and soggy.

Crum sliced the potatoes paper-thin, fried them until crisp, and salted them heavily as a sarcastic response. The diner loved them, and "Saratoga Chips" became the restaurant's signature dish.
