Is your filter dirtier than a teenager's room?

Turn off the AC at the thermostat and breaker before touching anything. Pop open the front panel or grille and slide out the filter. Hold it up to a window; if you can't see light through it, it needs cleaning now.

Rinse it under lukewarm tap water, moving from the clean side to the dirty side, for about 60 seconds, then let it air-dry completely on a towel for two to three hours before sliding it back in. A wet filter can grow mold and wreck your system.
